Glazed Partitions: Types, Options and Uses

A clear comparison of glazed partition types: frameless, framed, Crittall-style, demountable, acoustic and fire-rated, with where each one works best.

Key takeaways

  • Frameless gives the cleanest look; framed gives structure and better door integration.
  • Crittall-style is a framed system with a grid of narrow bars.
  • Demountable systems are built to be relocated; fixed systems are not.
  • Acoustic and fire-rated are performance classes that apply across styles.

How glazed partitions are classified

Glazed partitions are usually described in two ways at once: by appearance (frameless, framed, Crittall-style) and by performance (acoustic, fire-rated, demountable). A single system can be all of these, for example a framed, demountable, double-glazed acoustic partition. Our glass partition walls hub links to each family in depth.

Frameless partitions

Frameless partitions hold each panel in slim top and bottom channels with near-invisible vertical joints. They give maximum light and the most open feel, and they are the default choice for long runs. See frameless glass partitions for specification details.

Framed and black-framed partitions

Framed systems hold glass in aluminium profiles, which add rigidity, make doors easier to integrate and give a defined architectural line. Black frames are the most popular finish. See our black framed glass partitions specifier’s guide.

Crittall-style partitions

Crittall-style partitions use a grid of narrow glazing bars to recreate the look of traditional steel windows. They add character to offices, studios and homes. See Crittall-style partitions for modern interiors.

Demountable partitions

Demountable systems are dry-assembled so they can be taken apart and rebuilt elsewhere. They suit tenants expecting to change layouts or move. See demountable vs fixed glass partitions.

Acoustic and fire-rated partitions

Acoustic partitions are specified to a tested Rw rating, using acoustic laminated or double glazing with sealed doors. Fire-rated partitions are tested assemblies that resist fire for a stated period. Both are performance requirements rather than looks; see the acoustic glass partitions hub and our fire rated glass partitioning guide.

Questions

Which glazed partition type is cheapest?

Single-glazed frameless or simple framed systems are usually the most economical. Acoustic double-glazed and fire-rated systems cost the most.

Can I mix partition types on one project?

Yes. It is common to use frameless runs for open areas and acoustic or framed systems for meeting rooms, with consistent finishes throughout.
