Glass Meeting Rooms: Design, Acoustics and Cost

How to plan glass meeting rooms that work: sizing, layout, acoustic targets, doors, privacy, AV and what drives cost for London offices.

Key takeaways

  • Size rooms for how they will actually be used, not for the maximum headcount.
  • Set an acoustic target per room type before choosing a system.
  • The door and ceiling void decide privacy as much as the glass.
  • Plan AV, power and visual privacy into the partition design.

Planning the rooms

Start with how meetings happen in your business. Most organisations have far more two-to-four person meetings and video calls than large meetings, so a mix of small focus rooms, mid-size team rooms and one or two larger rooms usually works better than a single big boardroom. Our office glass partitions hub covers whole-office layout.

Typical meeting room sizes
RoomPeopleApproximate size
Focus or phone room1–2Around 3–5 m²
Small meeting room4Around 8–10 m²
Team room6–8Around 14–20 m²
Boardroom10–16Around 30–45 m²

Acoustics

General team rooms are usually well served by acoustic laminated single glazing around Rw 38–40. HR, interview and leadership rooms benefit from around Rw 44, and boardrooms from double glazing at Rw 50 or more. Read Rw ratings explained to understand what each level sounds like, and the acoustic glass partitions hub for system options.

Doors

For rooms with a privacy target, use framed hinged doors with perimeter and drop-down seals. Sliding doors save space but rarely seal as well. See our guide to glass office doors.

Visual privacy

Manifestation bands, satin or fluted glass at seated eye level, integral blinds in double-glazed systems and switchable glass all add visual privacy without losing light.

AV, power and services

Screens and cameras need a solid wall or a dedicated glass-mounted bracket solution. Plan floor boxes, cable routes and any ceiling-mounted microphones before the glass is ordered.

Cost drivers

The largest drivers are glass specification, door type and acoustic treatment. For current London ranges, see how much glass partitions cost in London.

Questions

How private can a glass meeting room be?

With double glazing, a sealed door and a treated ceiling void, normal conversation can be made inaudible outside the room.

Can you convert an existing meeting room to glass?

Yes. We can replace solid walls or upgrade existing glazing. See our guide to soundproofing a meeting room with glass.
