Glass Manifestation: UK Rules and Design Options

UK glass manifestation requirements explained: when markings are needed, the height zones, contrast and design options from frosted bands to branded graphics.

Key takeaways

  • Large areas of clear glass that people could walk into must be marked.
  • Approved Document K sets two zones: roughly 850–1000 mm and 1400–1600 mm above floor level.
  • Markings must contrast with the background behind the glass.
  • Manifestation can be decorative or branded as long as it is clearly visible.

What is manifestation?

Manifestation is any marking on glass that makes it visible, so people do not walk into it. In England it is covered by Approved Document K of the Building Regulations, with further guidance on visual contrast in BS 8300 for accessibility. It applies to almost every partition on our glass partition walls hub.

When manifestation is required

Markings are generally needed on large areas of transparent glazing in places people move through, including glass doors and partitions next to doors. Exemptions can apply where the glass is already obvious, for example where there are permanent mullions, transoms or rails at suitable heights, or where furniture prevents people walking into it.

Height zones and contrast

Approved Document K recommends markings in two zones, approximately 850–1000 mm and 1400–1600 mm above finished floor level, so they are visible to people of different heights and to wheelchair users. The marking must contrast with the view behind it in both lighting conditions, which is why a single frosted band can be ineffective against a white wall.

Check contrast against what will be behind the glass once the space is furnished, not against an empty floor.

Design options

  • Frosted dot or line bands
  • Graded or gradient films
  • Logos and brand patterns
  • Room names and wayfinding
  • Coloured vinyl in brand colours
  • Etched or sandblasted glass

Planning manifestation into the design

Manifestation works best when designed alongside the partition grid, so bands align with transoms and door heads. We can supply standard or bespoke designs and apply them before handover. See also glass partition design ideas.

Questions

Do homes need glass manifestation?

Requirements focus on non-domestic buildings, but marking large clear glass in homes is still sensible for safety.

Can manifestation be removed later?

Vinyl films can be replaced or updated. Etched glass is permanent.
